My great uncle flew on this plane (Powerful Katrina) 1 month before it was shot down. 2 days later in his regular plane (42-38082) he and all crew were killed when they collided with THE OLD FOX (42-37844) while being attacked by german fighters.

Good catch Marty. The caption on the back of the photo says it was taken on May 20, 1944. I wonder if the uncle of Tulsa Mike in post #3 might be in this picture, date is about what he said. Note the photo number in the lower right corner, this is the same photo Shooshoobaby mentioned in his post. Hal

Thank you for your help. I have this photo. "Powerful Katrinka" was completely destroyed during the crash. There are no visible remains on the ground. All of the crew parachuted and were interned by the Spanish for a month. - Thierry -

Hi - I am Fred Mervine's daughter. You list him as the Bombadier on the Powerful Katrinka, and your message says that he is pictured in the photo. The photo that I am looking at pictures 8 guys and your list has 9 guys on it. I am wondering if Fred is the one who took the photo, as I do not think he is one of the 8 guys in the photo. I just went to my dad's brother's funeral and heard lots of stories about my dad. He never talked about the war when we were growing up, so I did not know alot of the history of his WWII service. I want to find out more now. Cynde

Hello from France, I am really happy to know you. Welcome to this forum. I worked all this afternoon on my document about “Powerrful Katrinka”. I am preparing a letter to a member of the crew that crashed in June 25, 1944. I am in contact with your sister (I think) since last October. I have a question I wanted to ask her but I am asking you: - Which town is born your father? – I am in contact with one of the men on the photo. I think he can talk about your father. Sincerely, Thierry Good night !

Hi Thierry - I am Fred Mervine's daughter. He was the bombardier on the crew of the Powerful Katrinka. I have biographical information on him. If you are still working on the history of Powerful Katrinka, I can supply you with information. Also in our family treasures, we have his flight jacket. If I remember correctly, the jacket has the dates of all the missions he flew. Now I am interested in finding out all I can about my dad's war record, since I just recently found out he received the distinguished flying cross with three oak clusters.

Hi Thierry- Fred Mervine was born Fred M Kimmel to Leon & Beulah Kimmel in Higgins, Pennsylvania on 6 July, 1916. His father, Leon died in the influenza epidemic of 1918 when Fred was just 2 years old. His mother remarried soon after that to Merton Mervine. Although Fred was never legally adopted by Mr. Mervine, he did take the name and legally changed his name to Mervine when he entered the military.

My grandfather - Elmer "Army" Armstrong - served on the first crew (pictured). This past April he was one of the WWII vets enabled to go on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
