416th Bomb Squadron, 99th Bomb Group

My father Carl E Lorberau was stationed with the 15th Air Force in the 416th Bomb Squadron, 99th Bomb Group in 1944 to 1945. He mentioned he was stationed in Foggia?? Italy, and was a "togalier" (bombadier??) on a B-17 and flew around 30 missions.

He never talked about his war expieriences, but being a history buff I always pressed him for details (bomb group, squadron, name of plane, etc). He just recently passed away at the age of 82 on June 3rd of cancer, and I came into possession of some of his papers stating the above bomb group/squadron.

I was wondering if anyone had any records of his plane and missions he was on. His papers stated he bombed northern Italy, Austria, and Southern Germany. Any information would be helpful.

As a footnote, Dad retired after 30 years in the USAF in 1973 at the rank of CMSGT, and was a proud Air Force veteran.

Thanks for any information.

    Kevin,
Sorry to hear about your dad.  You have joined the right site for gaining historical information on the army air force and your dad.  I asked a similar question to yours about a year ago and recieved a lot of useful information from veterans and veteran's family members etc.  I just joined myself and my grandfather into the 99th Bomber Group Historical Society as he was also in the 416th.  Good luck with your requests, the other members on this site are very generous in giving a helping hand.

My father Carl E Lorberau is being interned today at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent Washington. He was very proud to serve with the USAAF and spend 30 years in the USAF.

Thanks for the replies and I will contact Dick shortly to get more info.

My dad has an online obituary at www.edwardsmemorial.com if anyone would like to visit, along with a photo of him in 1950 (he was so young then!!)

Thanks again, and I will be visiting the web site often.

Kevin. Condolences from another son of a 99'er. This group is a great forum where our dad's live-on today. I've found out more about my father's time in WWII from these folks than I did from my own father. It's so humbling to learn of their hardships and their achivements and yet most of us kids never heard our fathers complain.
Learning what I have so far, I believe that the 99th BG organization had good leaders and that they built pride in their men that most of them carried with them the rest of their days.
These were great and humble men. Sorry for your loss.

    Mark,
We didn't consider the living conditions too bad. We were young and were able to endure some discomfort, It was a job that had to be done, so we did it. We were always able to improvise to make things a little better.

    Hi
I have just acquired some belongings of William I. Anderson. He was in the same group out of Europe. He flew bombing runs in Italy on B-17s. He was a pilot and 2nd Lt. He lived locally in the Greensboro, N.C. area. I don't have his uniform but alot of his personal belongings during WW2. He died July 2009. He served our country well.

I was searching for information about my grandfather and stumbled upon this message. It sounds like my grandfather may have known your father.  My grandfather's name was A.A. Gentry and he was a B-17 pilot.  5th bomb wing, 99th Bomb Group 416th.  Tortorella Airfield, Foggia, Italy around 1943-45.

    Indigo,
There is an Al A Gentry in the 99th BG roster, but I don't have any other information on him.  Do you happen to have any more information on your grandfather such as the missions he flew?

    Marty,
I knew an Al Gentry many years ago at 99th reunions, but I'm pretty sure that he was a Navigator.
