3rd Scouting Force
-
01/18/2003 09:07:21 PM
I just had to post, since my Dad was an original member of the 3rd Scouting Force. Captain O.V. Lancaster flew his first scouting mission on 9/15/44 (Warsaw, aborted). He went on to fly 47 missions with the 3rd., as Operations Officer. Previously he had flown 29 bombing missions, with the 385th, piloting Sleepytime Gal and Rum Dum.

There's a handsome portrait of your father at the web site.

Scout, I have a decent scan of a 3rd SF formation photo, if you are interested in a copy. Let me know and I'll email you it....you may not have seen it before. Kind regards, Shabby www.55th.org

Shabby, I have not been viewing this website on a regular basis. I appreciate your offer and would very much like to have the scanned photo. Sincerely, Scout

ShooShoobaby, thanks much for the tips. I have both of these books. Dad will be 85 soon and is constantly amazed at the continued interest in the 385th as well as the wealth of information on the actual planes he flew. I appreciate your interest. Sincerely, Scout.

Erich, I don't recall off-hand when his tour ended. I do remember Dad talking about being on leave in the States when V-E day occured. He has many times recounted his only meeting with an ME-262. He was returning from a mission when he encountered the jet which came up on his tail. He went into a steep power dive and picked up so much speed that he lost response from his control surfaces. The only way he recovered was to fire his machine guns to "dirty up the air" over the control surfaces. He pulled out of the dive and found that he had lost the ME-262. That was his only encounter.
