2Lt. Dale N. Greeley of the 370th Fighter Group, 401st Fighter Squadron entered the service from Idaho. He died March 1, 1945 and is buried in Plot D, Row 12, Grave 33 in Ardennes American Cemetery in Neupre, Belgium. He was awarded the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. This from the ABMC site.

The location of the grave is familiar to me. My brother is buried in Plot D, Row 13, Grave 56.

Hello Germanuser,

I wrote a history of the 370th, titled "The 370th Fighter Group In World War Two: In action with the P-38 and P-51". My grandfather was a pilot in the 370th, but not in Dale Greeley's Squadron.

Dale was the last 401st Squadron pilot killed in combat (but, unfortunately, not the last 401st pilot killed). I have some pictures of him I'd be happy to share. I am not in contact with any of his family, but I am in touch with veterans who knew him.

I would enjoy hearing information about the possible excavation of his crash site and its location.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Jay

Hello Jay, Me old matey !  How the devil are you ?  Since your last email to me a few weeks ago, I have had massive PC meltdown and lost pretty much everything on the bugger including both your email and your email address.
I didn't panic at first, since I emailed Schliffer Books and asked them to pass a message on to you, but I never heard back from 'em, so I guess that was a non starter !  Getting just a bit desperate, this morning I emailed their UK office, but later had the idea of trawling through all of the 9th. Air Force forum with a view to posting up a message asking for anyone who had your email address to pass on a message to you ( I already did this on this forum about 10 minutes ago, before I thought that I'd just have a general surf of this forum and, bugger me, there was an email from you !!)

I hope that you and Tava, Mallory and Hunter are well and happy, and, when you get a moment in that busy life of yours, can you kindly re-send me your last email !!
In the meantime Rosanne, Carenza and me wish you all a bloody good Christmas and a VERY HAPPY New Year !!!
I'm off to the pub,
Steve Lyden-Brown.

Andre,

Your English is much better than my German! After three years in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Hanau, I still got "the look" when trying to converse in German.

That having been said, I use an on-line translator http://babel.altavista.com/tr as a courtesy to my non-American speaking friends on this website - see attachment.

Take what you like and leave the rest….

Andy

Andre,

[Hello everybody,
I read about that plane crash near Korbach at the 1st of march 1945. My mother often told me about that incident she witnessed as a young woman. She watched the pilot land in the fields with his parachute and distinctly remembers that the pilot was taken away by some German "officials". Well, I really wonder what happened to that young man after that.
My best regards from Berlin / Germany

I am Dale Greeley.  The pilot killed in the P-38 crash on March 1st 1945 was my uncle.  The only thing I know about that event is what I read in Jay Jones' book.  My grandmother would only say that he was a pilot and was lost in the war - as she showed me his purple heart.  I was born in 1961 and was named after him.

The after-action report talks about Soest, which is see is 40 miles from Korbach.  Images of his excavated airplane would be very interesting to me.  Would be wreckage be placed in a local museum?
The last photograph my family had of Dale was this one taken with his airplane.  On the back is written Lt. Dale Greeley age 23 England 1944

Dale,

I am pleased to see you have a photo of your Uncle. I wish I had been able to put it in the 370th book. Jay Jones
