312BG - 895th Chemical Coy - Fenton and Long Australia

G'Day Guys,

I'm in the process of gathering information to publish a book on the happening at Fenton and Long, both in the Daly Region of the Northern Territory of Australia. The main info required is with regard to the involvement of the 895th Chemical Company (Air Operations) Detachment, which where based at Amberley, QLD, Fenton, NT and New Guinea

As you will know, the 312th was based in Australia during WWII.

What I am looking for is any Unit Histories, Memoirs, Anecdotes, Photos, Documents, Archives etc...

Everything will help to go towards the final article, I have compiled a vast array from the Australian side, but little from the US.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged, over time I will feed bits and pieces that I collate onto the forums.

Many thanks gentleman.

Phillip

I don't know if I can be of service, but my father was in the 895th Chemical Company of the 5th USAAF in New Guinea, Southern Phillipines, and Luzon from 15 June 1943 to the end of the war.  I have done very little research as of yet, so cannot even confirm your attachment of that unit to the 312th BG.  (Joined this forum tonight so I could reply to you.)  You may be focusing on the earlier action in Australia.  I know he visited Australia on leave but I don't think he served there.

His rank was T-5, he had a three year enlistment, and he died in 1969.  I have only a little documentation and a couple of service photographs, nothing exciting, but am willing to share....

Best of luck on your research.

    Phillip,
I don't understand your connecting 895th Chemical Co. with 312th B Gp. which didn't base in Australia. After leaving the US, their next base was Gusap in New Guinea, at first operating P-40s under V Fighter Command.

In 1943, 895th Chemical Co. A. O. less detachment was at Amberley, Queensland, as part of 22nd Service Group, in turn part of Fifth Airforce Service Command. It was under the operational control of Fifth Air Force Service Command.

Also 1943, 895th Chemical Co. A. O. Detachment was at Fenton, Northern Territory, as part of 30th Service Sqn, in turn part of 22nd Service Group, in turn part of Fifth Air Force Service Command. It was under the operational command of V Fighter Command.

    Cheers, Wynnum.

    G'Day Gentlemen,

The reason I have posted on the 312 is that I recieved an email (below), forwarded to me. This was the only link that I had at the time to the 895. Where did you get that info from Wynnum, I'd love to know what they got up to, as it will be a small, yet significant part of my book. I have PM both of you...

    Thanks guys,

I stumbled on your site while trying to trace my WWII history. I was part of the 895th Chemical company (Air Operations) at Amberly Field from Dec. 1943 to spring 1944 when we were assigned to the 312th Bomb Group in Finchaven, New Guinea. I haven't been able to trace my company or bomb group. This info may not help you in your searchers but I thought that I would pass it along.
