    Hello,

My Father was a Right waist gunner on 42-37839 "Strato Express", His B-17 was on the Left of 42-37886, that planes name was "Blitzing Betty" Piloted by Lt Watts, I have a great friendship with the Tail Gunner from 886 that I met doing research, Lt Givens, Lt Watts were assigned to the 562nd Bomb Squadron as replacement crews after most of the original cadre were lost on the Schweinfurt/Regensburg missions, there were 12 crews assigned to the 562nd in 1943 and only 3 crews made it, a majority of them were lost on 6 Mar 1944, if you have or can find the book 388th At War, look up mission #76 and you will find a Formation Schematic showing these Aircraft.

If I can be of any more help please send an email to emo7@prodigy.net

    Sincerely,

My wife’s great uncle also crashed (and died) that day in that area but on the German side of the border at about 2:50 PM. He was in Shack Rabbits (42-38177, 388th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 561 Squadron). The crew members that day were 2Lt Augustine B. Christiani (Pilot) POW, 2Lt Clarence D. Farrington (Co-Pilot) nickname Red KIA, FO Leonard Levy (Navigator) POW, 2Lt Raymond R. Newark (Bombardier) nickname Rocky POW, T/Sgt Salvatore Ciaccio (Top Turret gunner) KIA, T/Sgt William B. Mayne (Radio Operator) KIA, Sgt Rupert G. Smith (Ball Turret gunner) nickname Snuffy KIA, Sgt William N. Kline (Left Waist Gunners) POW, S/Sgt William A. Pope Jr (Right Waist Gunners) POW and S/Sgt John C. Griscom (Tail Gunner) KIA. The bomber went down in flames due to many hits from FW190s.

I have been able to piece together most of what happened that day...

    Hi Mike,
I was wondering if there are any Decals for your Dad's P-51 and also I can't tell from pics but what is stenciled or painted above Shoo Shoo Baby on the top of the engine compartment in the green or anti-glare area? Thanks for any info.

    Sincerely
    Ed
