Looking for information on 2nd Lt. Richard E. Dunkleberger a B17 C0-Pilot who was killed July 21, 1944 on his third/fifth? mission over Austria. He was stationed with the 15th AF based at Foggia, Italy. Do not know what bomb grp or sq he was in. Any help would be appreciated!

Linda,
If the LT.was in the 2nd BG,20th BS,he would have been stationed at Amendola,Italy.Foggia is a misnomer/misconception used by many as being a 15th AAF Bomber Air Base. It's a lot easier to pronounce and remember than some of the other air bases. Many replies back to a post,Jim Peters gave a very good definition of where all the bomber bases in Italy were located as to proximity to Foggia.

Hi! Guys......just thought I would give an update on Richard E. Dunkleberger. The above post on plane # 42-31789 is probably right. I found from a posting on another website from a cousin of Richard's who is a retired AF Col. He said that the pilot was McKenzie. 5 KIA, 5 POW. Those KIA were McKenzie, Dunkleberger, Rapley, Wickland, Lane. Those that were POW were Rice, Hartsfield, Stephenson, Suratt, Lane.  Shot down over Brux, CZ. Still do not know name of plane!.........hope this helps others..............Linda

Linda...Dick Drain's 5th Wing History of Aircraft Assigned does not show a name.

FYI...Not all aircraft were named OFFICIALLY.......and some of those un-named aircraft, actually had names, but, in order for a name/nose art to be OFFICIALLY recognized, the name/nose art  MUST be visible in a photo of the name/nose art WITH the aircraft data information, which is under the LEFT pilots' sliding window...This consists of the following :

U.S. ARMY  B-17G-30-B0
AIR FORCE SER.NO. 42-31789

If the name is on the RIGHT side of the nose, it cannot be verified OFFICIALLY, unless the tail number also shows in a photo of the nose art/name.  Most do not.

Re:2nd Lt. Richard E. Dunkleberger KIA - 09/14/2008 04:30:40 PM
Linda,

by chance I got in touch with Richard´s cousine Gene who would like to get in touch with you. He was trying to registrate himself into this forum but it failed so far. So he asked me if I could ask you for sending him an e-mail. Gene´s e-mail address is: hidter@aol.com

Many thanks in advance.

Roman

Here´s a copy of his e-mail:

Noted your reunion notice in my latest issue of MOAA.Though I did not belong to the 2nd Bomb Group, my cousin Richard E.Dunkleberger was a member of the 2nd Bomb Group, 20th Bomb Squadronoperating out of Amendola, Italy during WWII. He was co-pilot of aB-17, piloted by McKenzie. Their B-17 was jumped by a swarm ofGerman fighters and the aircraft went down. Richard was KIA on his 5thmission over Brux, Czechoslovakia on July 21, 1944.

I have received most all the details I need from thePentagon under the Freedom of Information Act. These documentsindicate five of the crew (McKenzie, Dunkleberger, Rapley, Wicklandand Lane) were KIA. There were five surviving crew members; Rice,Hartsfield, Stephenson, Suratt and Lane. They were subsequentlycaptured and interred as POW's until the end of the war.

My purpose in writing is a request to post my e-mailon your bulletin board at the reunion. Perhaps some of thesurviving members of this aircraft (# 789) are still with us. Orperhaps there may be an attendee at the reunion who may recall mycousin and can relate some anecdotal information to me.

Richard was my idol at the time and a great influenceon my future career. I went on to join the Air Force in 1955, became apilot and retired with the rank of Colonel after 25 years service,6,500 hours.

Even if this request hits a dead end, I would like tooffer my heartfelt gratitude to all the brave men & women whoserved in that great war & saved the world. I salute the 15thAir Force, 2nd Bomb Group. God Bless and have a greatreunion!

Sincerely,

Eugene (Gene) C. Kennedy
