2nd Lt Newel T HENRETTY - 441st Troop Carrier Group !!

Hi everybody,
 
I have found a small grouping relative to 2nd Lt Newel T HENRETTY (1918-2003) from Pennsylvania.
 
I have found that Mr Henretty was a pilot of C-47 aircraft during wwii on the 302nd Troop Carrier Squadron - 441st Troop Carrier Group - 50th Troop Carrier Wing.
 
Mr Henretty participed during D-Day insasion where him and his crew landed 501th PIR paratropers from Merryfield - England to over Normandy.
 
I have found too an Accident report on december 1944 for "Taxiing Accident" in Aldermaston airfield - England.
 
The serial number of his C-47 aircraft during d-day and in december is the same : "43-15035".
 
I know that 441st TCG participed during Market Garden, Bastogne supply and Operation Varsity.
 
Can you give me more informations about this pilot (awards, pictures, ...) ? Can you say me if he have particped during other operation than d-day ?

He was a pilot also during Varsity!

C-47 #43-15066 Chalk number #40 in serial A18 towing glider 43-79276 (pilot : Roberts)
Serial A18 took off from airfield A-41 - time take off: 0858 - time LZ: 1214 - LZ: N
elements carried : 517 Signal Company in gliders 25 to 48

There is no real 441st Troop Carrier Association still operating as far as I am aware.
 
Unofficially, I have stepped up to try and record the history of the 441st and its squadrons of the 99th, 100th 301st and 302nd and hold copies of most of their historical documents.  I will search through them and see what (if anything) I can find.
 
Firstly in some of the 441st records his name appears as Newell T Hennetty and he came from Bradford, PA. however in the NARA database it appears as Henretty which may complicate things just a little.
 
I willlet you know what I can find.

I'm looking for some information on my great uncle. I know for a fact he was in the 50th Troop Carrier Wing but I don't know what group or squadron. If you could tell me if he shows up in any of the 441st records that would be greatly appreciated. His name was 1st LT Max Farrand Stripling from Mineral Wells, Texas. Any information on him would be very helpful.

A lucky hit here.  1st Lt Max Stripling shows up as a witness who last sighted another aircraft that was lost on a glider towing mission to Bastogne on 27 December 1944.  The aircraft that was lost was with the 439th TC Group, 93rd TC Squadron.  It might be a stretch but I would assume that your uncle was with the same outfit.  In his statement Lt Stripling was noted to be the pilot of aircraft 43-15088.  His service serial number is given as 0-751483.  According to the MACR the 439th was based in Chateaudun, France at that time.

If you have access to Footnote.com do a search using his first and last names and it will lead you to the Missing Air Crew Report covering the loss of C-47A serial number 42-100840.

Not a lot but at least a starting point.

In your 93/439 list does a Lt. Mack Striplin also show up?

I do not have a roster for the 93/439.  Totally by chance I stumbled on to Max Stripling by doing a Footnote search and he was listed on a MACR.  There is a Mack Striplin listed in the Enlistment records at the National Archives.  Born in Texas in 1915.

Mack Striplin received his G wings, F/O rank, later promoted to 2Lt.  Assigned to 93/439, flew Normandy, So.France, and Bastogne glider missions.  If you see a picture of a very tall, huge, GP with a seat pack, standing next to a TG (5,6,8) with his instructor, that was Mack Striplin.
