2nd BG ferry route? - 09/10/2007 02:41:06 PM
Does anyone know the ferry routes the 2nd BG used to get their B-17's across the Atlantic? I'm going to be recreating this flight in flight sim. I know I have it somewhere in a letter from the navigator because I remember him writing me that the radio compass went out, and had to navigate using a sextant. Unfortunately, the letter's three hours away at home. If anyone has this info, please let me know.

Thanks

DN

Dan...Excerpt from the "Second Was First" : pp. 15, and 16.

The route most followed was Morrison Field, West Palm Beach, Florida, where it received it's orders, information and equipment for over water flight;  Waller Field,Trinidad;  Belem,Brazil;  Ascension Issland; Dakar,French West Africa; and finally Marrakech,Morrocco. Some flew directly from Natal to Dakar.

Dan...
They arrived at Marrakech on March 22,1943....stayed for a month and moved to a field near Navarin, Algeria oin April 23,1943.  Due to unfavorable field conditions they received orders to move to an airfield at Chateau Du Rhumel, Algeria on 26 Apr 1943 and on the morning of 27 April, 1943, they were on the way to the new base, and operations, as part of the 12th AAF.

The first mission was flown on April 28, 1943.

On the 21 June 1943, the mission was flown from Ain M'Lila, Algeria.

On 4 Aug 1943, the mission was flown from Massicualt, Tunisia.

The move to Amendola took place between 9 Dec 43 and 14 Dec 43 when the 14 Dec 43 mission was flown from Amendola.

We could also have been routed through the Azores.

That's it, the Azores! Now I remember! They lost their ADF enroute to the Azores, so while my grandfather the radio operator, was trying to fix it, the nav had to take sextant readings.

If you could post this route, I would be much appreciative!
Thanks,

DN
