The pilot was Marshall L. Hanna from Oklahoma, who became a POW at Luft Stalag I at Barth, Germany. He had received his pilots wing at Williams Field near Chandler, AZ in January 1944. Hope that this is helpful to you, Steve

Hello Jaap, My name is Gary Koch and I am the official historian of the 474th FG Association. I normally don't subscribe to this post, but recently signed up when I saw your post. As for Marshall Hanna, there is not a whole lot that I can add. The information from your previous repliers is correct. Unfortunately, the official 430th FS history, "The Backdoor Gang", is not very detailed. All it says about this crash is "On September 17th, another pilot was lost when Marshall Hanna augered in near Duren in Germany, the victim of an intense flak barrage. Popular and well liked in the Squadron, it was the hope of all that he would somehow manage to get back again." I do know that his P-38 was coded "K6-S". It was also Group Mission No. 166, the day's second mission. The 428th was to provide cover for 430th FS whose target was to bomb airfields in the Bonn-Koln-Dusseldorf area. The 428th was forced to abort on the account of weather. To my knowledge, Marshall Hanna is still alive today. Let me see if I can find him amongst the 474th vets that I know. Cheers, Gary

Hello Jaap, I apologize for the long delay in getting back to you. I do not show a 474th FG loss on 6 Jun 44 anywhere near Holland. The only other 474th losses in Holland (other than Hanna) were on 9 Apr 44 (Lt. Dettre, 428 FS, Ijsselmeer near Hindeloopen) and 18 Dec 44 (Lt. Strong, 428FS, near Maastricht). See if you can find any more details for me and I'll research for you. Cheers, Gary
