You might want to pick up the book Flight Boots to Wooden Shoes by Claude Murray. Lots of details with lots of pictures and his return trip to visit the people that helped him.

There's no ISBN number on it. Printed by Meaker The Printer, INC 1995. The only other info is the Library of Congress Catalog Card NO. TX 3 345 355.

The next thing was that he was hit by fire from an Me262.
The spelling given is Murray Claude C.
He became Jan Pieter Smit.
 
The story of his shoot down and evasion is given with photo's in the book "Eyes of the Eighth" by Patricia Fussell Keen.ISBN 0-9649119-0-6.
 
Lots more in this book worth it.
