27/12/1944 Bastogne supply drops - 01/02/2007 08:14:50 AM
Hello ,

On 12/27/1944  aircraft # 42-100862 from the 94Sqn was lost , can someone gives me the names and fate of the crew and eventually the crashsite ?

The same day Capt Nachowitz Edward 93 Sqn was killed , Capt Turner Ernest crashed his aircraft , what were the serial numbers of these aircraft .

Thanks already for the help

Phil
Just a minor correction.. 42-100862 was CN #74

Alain
on 12/27/1944 the crew of #42-100862 was
pilot: 1st Lt Ernest Turner
co-pilot: 2nd Lt Keistutis J. Narbutas
Crew-chief: T/Sgt. John E. Douglas
Radio-op: S/Sgt. Richerd G. Whitehurst

The were hit by .50-cal machine gun fire while towing a glider and they made a soft wheels-up landing on the LZ near the road between Bastogne and Hemroulle.

Testimony, full story and photographs are in "Into the Valley" p362 - 364

The other plane was #42-100840
pilot: Capt. Edward Nachowitz
co-pilot: 1st Lt. Edward L. Williams
navigator: 1st Lt. Robert W. Nelson
crew-chief: T/Sgt. Vernon J. Brasch
radio-op: Sgt. John N. McCann

They were hit by flak in the belly. Some of the crew bailed out but Nelson's chute turned into a "cigarette" and never opened. Capt. Nachowitz never got out of the plane before it crashed. Other members were taken POW by the germans.
testimony from Edward L. Williams, always from "Into the Valley" p358 - 360
