26th FS 'fighting rabbit' patch
My dad was in the 26th FS flying out of Kunming. In the China Blitzer squadron. However, one of the patches he brought home was of a fighting rabbit with boxing gloves on. Can anyone shed any light on the significance of this patch. I know he wore the 'Blitzer' patch on his leather jacket and it was on his P-40 nose, but not sure about the rabbit. Also, looking for info on the 'Flying Horse Squadron'. In one of the CBI articles about a successful air battle in Dec 1943, the article showed several squadron pics (showing the 'Blitzer') but called them the 'Flying Horse' squadron. Was that correct, or a misnomer? Thanks for any help. Jeff

Jeff Jeff, As you probably know the 26th Fighter Squadron, "China Blitzers" was assigned to the 51st Fighter Group, often at that time referred to as the "Flying Horse Group". In addition, the 16th Fighter Squadron was referred to as the "Flying Horse Squadron." Unfortunately, I do not know the origin of these names, only that they show up in many, many news releases and articles from the 1943-45 era. Can't help with the "rabbit patch," first time I have seen it.

Rick is correct - the patch you are showing (the fighting rabbit) is the 90th Fighter Sq.

Thanks all. Flying Horse Squadron- I read one of the CBI articles that inadvertently called the 26th FS the Flying Horse Squadron... which I guess should have been the Blitzers as part of the Flying Horse Group. This info helps clear that up. Thx Tony. Rabbit Patch- It definitely is the 90th FS of the 80th FG, I see now. I have more work to do to figure out why my dad (definitely in the 26th Blitzers) had that patch also. He had it framed with his medals for years, before he died. I know when he transferred back from China, he flew P-51s in Fla, training new pilots. But the 90th FS doesn't show that as part pf their lineage. Thx Rick and Gary.

Is it possible your dad served in the 90th FS before he joined the 26th? There was a large swap of personnel between the 51st and 80th fighter groups when the 80th arrived in the CBI in the summer of '43 to give the new group a cadre of combat-experienced pilots from the 51st. The 51st moved up to China at this time. Perhaps your father came overseas with the 90th and then transferred to the 26th. What was his name? Carl

Carl Thanks for your input. Re: Rabbit patch: My brother has his logbook, but it doesn't mention the squadrons he flew with, only the flight date / time and missions. I know he was originally sent to Karachi, and then transferred to Kunming after a few months (when the 26th FS transferred there to be part of the 14th AF). But I also see that the 90th FS (that had the Rabbit patch) was also in Karachi at the same time as my dad, in mid to late 1943. Your suggestion makes as much sense as anything we come up with. My brother and I, knowing our dad, also were thinking it is as likely that he may have swapped patches with members of the 90th squadron, over a few rounds of libation at the Officer's Club.....(lol) I have recently requested his USAAF personnel file and hope it sheds some light on this. I have several of your books and appreciate the work you have done. Because of your expertise with the AVG and 14th AF, I was hoping you may have some insight as to a personal quest of my family. That is, we saw on the Antiques Roadshow, a few years ago, that someone in California has a piece of the aluminum cowling from my dad's crashed P-40 (showing the 'Blitzer' insignia) and his name. I know it is from a crash he had in Feb 1943, in a rice paddy coming back from a night mission with one other pilot. Would you happen to know anything about that important artifact/cowling? We have spent hundreds of hours trying to track it down, but to no avail. This website will take you to the ARS address with the appraisal. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200505A46.html Also, in all your research, did you ever come across a picture of his plane "Galloping Gator" when he was part of the 26th FS? Thanks again for your thoughts. Jeff
