216th Base Unit (Special) General orders and Special Orders

216th Base Unit (Special) General orders and Special Orders

I am looking for copies of any General Orders and Special Orders issued by the 216th Base Unit (Special), Second Air Force, part of the Manhattan Project under the Command of Col. Clifford Heflin. I have submitted an FOIA request with AFHRA for all such orders issued by this Command during 1945. I have three examples of Special Orders and have attached two pages of SO #109 as an example.

I have no examples of any General Orders and would like to provide an example to AFHRA to aid in their search for these documents. Thanks in advance for any help with copies of General Orders issued by the 216th Base Unit (Special).

Respectfully,
Scott

Hello, I am the son of PFC James Halloran, aircrew member of flight test section, SQ. A 216th AAFBU (Sp) 2AF. Going through his papers I came accross a copy of special order 275, dated 9 September 1945. This order assigned the 216th from Wendover to Kirtland AAF. This order has about 171 officers and em listed on it.

I was unaware of the move to Kirtland. Does the order state the effective date of the move? And does it deal with the entire 216th or only Squadron A?

This movement order is only for the flight test section. By order of Col. Heflin. This four page order has various groups leaving between October 11, 1945 up to the 18th. Some by train, POC or air.

    James,
Welcome to the forum good to have onboard!!!
The movement of the 216th FTS to Kirtland is an important document as the movement of the Special Ordnance Detachment to Kirtland/Sandia is documented in Special Order number 9 , date 7 December 1945 at the end of James Rowe’s book Project W-47; Attachment after p.214. This book by Rowe is fraught with inaccuracies, but SO #9 seems to be a true order of movement.

I have been in contact with Keith Shields son of Maj. Clyde Shields CO of the 216th AAFBU (Sp) Flight Test Section as well as Darrell Dvorak son-in-law of Col, Heflin. If you check my posts in the 509th CG area of the forum you’ll find the records of the 216th (Sp) have been purged from National Archives; so we have been searching for progeny of those members for more documents and here you are. Send me a PM if you would like to exchange email addresses.

In the meantime would it be possible for you to post a copy of the documents you have to the forum as they are part of a missing link to history; and again welcome to the forum, your input on this subject is greatly appreciated.

    Best,

You probably have one of the last Orders issued by Heflin as CO of the 216th, because he was relieved of that command on Oct 16 and, eleven days later, became CO of Roswell AAF (designations: 238th and 427th AAF Base Units), to which the 509th CG returned from Tinian, where they were disbanded and became part of the new Strategic Air Command.

Good to hear that there are still folks around who are finding records related to the 216th, which has been buried far too long.
