Today I got a copies from the Freeman´s book with the 20 mm cannon tail installation on a B-17. Unfortunately in pdf format that can not be posted here. Anyway, I´m still wodering how such a long weapon could find a place in such a small tail...

Hal...See my message..Post #34....(lower right hand corner) And yes, according to the photo, the 20mm was in addition to the twin .50 MGs.....it was not effective due to limited azimuth range...side to side...the installation was too limited in the application. Jim :-)

Roman, Can't speak to a 20mm tail gun on a B-17 but the capability to have 20mm cannon mounted as part of the defensive suite at the B-29 tail gun position was standard on some models. I don't think many aircraft included them - probably to save weight? I know Curtis Lemay had defensive armament removed on B-29s conducting night bombing missions over Japan in order to increase bomb load. Flight crews were not supportive of his initiative. Andy,, I am also on the B-29 website and the reason the 20mm cannon was removed from a small number of the B-29s, had to do with the different trajectory of the 20mm shells versus the .50 cal MGs. It was not the weight, it was the different trajectory. Jim :-) 92nd BG (M) Korea.

Jim or the others, what do you think, was this Hispano installed alone or along with M2? It´s not so clear from the picture in Freeman´s book but I´d say I can see 2 barrells there... The second barrel may be also a part of the sight as there´s writen: The sight was a ring-and-bead on the end of the long rod attached to the gun barrell. As M/Sgt Morley Russell, who worked on this installation, commented: ''The sight sure was a real Rube Goldberg type, but it worked well.'' My English is limited so is that second barrell really a part of the sight? Thanks
