He was hit by german Flak on Oct. 7th. 1944 over der airfield Fritzlar, germany and his P-47 D-15 RE "Thunderbolt" crashed near the village Schiffelbach. Lt. Dirk--Mike
he was shot down by flak while strafing. This was 356FG mission 277, penetration-target-withdrawal escort to 2nd AD  B-24s to Kassel ( time up 0948, time down 1430 ). Leader was Lt. Col. Tukey.
On the way back 2 flights from the 361st strafed Fritzlar AF and claimed 8-18; Roberts destroyed an Me. 110, his only claim of the war.
He joined the 356th in June 1944 and flew 58 missions in 173.50 hours. His assigned aircraft was P-47D-15-RE 42-76177  QI-P " Mad wolves".( shot down in this). His nickname was " Pinky ".

From the 361FS diary...................." Lt. Hooker saw Robert's plane get hit on the left side of the engine, the engine was smoking badly . Lt. Roberts pulled up to about 2000ft. , couldn't gain any more altitude. Then Roberts said over the RT that his engine was quitting . Lt. Hooker escorted Roberts for about 10 minutes on a course of 260 degrees . Lt. Roberts was losing altitude and speed. Lt. Hooker could not contact him on the radio but saw Roberts open his canopy and bail out of the right side of his plane from about 400 feet and saw Lt. Roberts in a wooded area on a hill, about 35 miles southwest of Fritzlar.".

Other pilots reported his position as about 12 miles from Marburg----Schiffelbach is midway between Fritzlar and Marburg.
Do you want details of his P-47 ? it was formerly flown by Capt. Ray Gansberg.               Nick

Roberts was believed killed by civilians who were seen in that area.
His father presented a trophy--the " Lt. Paul J. Roberts Jr. Memorial Trophy" ---to the National Board for the promotion of rifle practice ( NBPRP ) to be awarded to the highest scoring Air Force competitor ( 1958 ).    Nick

Thank you very much!
Yes, "Pinky" Roberts has been shot from a german policeman, named Dietermann. The murderer was dead by hanging on January, 12th 1946 in the prison of Bruchsal.
For the book, I am writing now, I am looking for photos ob Lt. Roberts and/or his P-47, named Mad Wolves. I asked some years ago at the people for the Paul J. Roberts Jr. Trophy, but I got no answer, if they have photos of this airman.

Thank you very much,
Sincerely yours,
Dirk

Dirk............this is the only photo I've seen of Roberts; this is the 361FS in Sept. 1944. I'm afraid it's very small .                                     Nick

And his plane. It was in the background of an air-to-air shot, the markings are correct but the artwork under the cockpit is not clear; it looks like a girl's head. The markings date it July--Sept.                   Nick

Thank you very much to buckeyeuk and shooshoobaby!
I thought I can get members of the family from Lt. Roberts or some of his comrades, who have photos of him, because I know that it give the Paul J. Roberts Jr. Trophy.
I understand that the family of him hate the germans because some of them murdered him.
But in our time we can do our work for a better time when we show what were done in this years of WW2.
I hope, that we can find familymembers ob Paul Joseph Roberts Jr., who can help me with a photograph for further researches.
Thank you for the friend, who helped me.
Best wishes
Dirk

Paul Joseph Roberts Jr. was murdered bei a policeman on Oct. 15th 1944 near the village Friedensdorf. He was captured on this day near the village Buchenau. The policeman shot him and was hanging up after the war.
For a book I am looking for a photograph of "Pinky" Roberts. My english isn´t so good and so I got no informations from the people of the Paul J. Roberts Jr- Trophy.
Best wishes from germany,
