I am not sure this is the same man or not. There is a grave in the East Cemetery of Manchester, CT for
Anderson, William L, b. c.1920, d. Sep 13 1943, age: 23, WWII, 1st Lt. 35th Fighter Sq
http://www.interment.net/data/us/ct/hartford/east/east_a.htm This puts him the the 35th Fighter Squadron (not the 35th Fighter Group). The 35th Fighter Squadron was part of the 8th Fighter Group. There are no scores listed for William L Anderson listed that I could find.
The 1930 Census for Hartford - Bristol City 2-106

William L Anderson, 01699387 DNB This says he died of not-battle causes. He may have died of malaria or dengue fever, there was a lot of
that in New Guinea.
This link has a little background on the 35th Fighter Squadron.
