1st Lt Jack McHenry KIA - 12/10/2006 03:23:25 PM
Looking for information on 1st LT Jack McHenry, 558th Bomb Sq, 387th Bomb Grp, B-26B, #41-31669,( Kay Pea's Dream ), Aircraft hit by flak and forced to ditch on June 15, 1944 in the Channel with loss of 3 crew, Pilot, Jack McHenry, CoPilot, James Jack & Radio Gunner, Dominic Gelormo. I know 2 of the survivers were Eng Gunner, Alexander Malash & Tail Gunner, Warren Schriver who were picked up by a British Destroyer. Mission was a raid on Villers Bocage near Caen, France. Were there other crew members on plane and if so who were they and is there any photos of plane or crew. Jack McHenry is listed as MIA. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Linda

Hi Linda,

I don't have any information about this AC or crew but the MACR 8164 should provide it. This report is available free of charge by contacting Lynn.Gamma@MAXWELL.AF.MIL  Expect a wait of several weeks to receive the report.

In checking the ABMC site, Jack McHenry is listed on the Tablets of the Missing or Buried at Sea at Cambridge American Cemetery in Cambridge, England. I didn't check the other two who were lost. I am not sure of the crew numbers for a B-26. Maybe the ones you mention are the full complement.

Linda, the squadron code for "A Kay Pea''s Dream" was KX-H. There is a well known photo of this Marauder airborne, copies of this are on sale at eBay on a quite regular basis. Added it here, so you know what to look for. The history book of 387th BG do not mention the loss of this Marauder. Regarding B-26 Marauder Crew; usually 6, sometimes 5, sometimes 7 or even 8 have been reported on combat missions (some of those observers). A typical B-26 crew consisted of these men, some with several functions.
  • Pilot
  • Co-Pilot
  • Navigator-Bombardier
  • Flight engineer-Gunner
  • Radio Operator-Gunner
  • Armourer-Gunner

Co-Pilot 1st Lt James Jack is also listed on "The Wall Of The Missing" at Cambridge, England, as is S/Sgt Dominic A. Gelormo. No other Marauder Men listed on this Wall for June 15th 1944.

Linda,

Photograph at attachment is probably the one Alf refers to in his post and is extracted from http://mach1collectibles.com/martin_b_26_marauder_a_kay_pea_s_dream_8x10_photograph.html

Website indicates copies are for sale.

Take what you like and leave the rest....

Andy
