1st LT Bernard (Billy) Gold WWII info please - 07/01/2007 11:34:00 AM
Looking for help with identification of three photos my uncle Billy Gold took apparently while with 19th BG.

1st photo is him and two crewmen in front of the plane. He's in the middle. Would like to ID the other two men and share that photo.

2nd photo is of a bomb drop, can only make out the number on one of the planes, 36. No date, no other info. Would be nice to know if it's from his unit, or just something he picked up.

3rd is of a battleship in harbor taken from flight, again nice to know if it's one he might have taken, or random shot he got.

I can't seem to get the photos to compress enough to post here, but if anybody thinks they can help I'll start and album.

Thanks to Roy for shrinking the images.

My uncle Bernard (Billy) Gold in center, with presumably two of his crewmen.

The battle ship in harbor in an airborne photo.

If anybody wants larger versions, I have the scans.

Pete

i was curious about the battleship in the photo, so as i had some spare time last night i went searching. after looking at lots of your battleships i could only find a match with the Iowa class. looks the same to me with the rounded bow. looks like a well or open turret right on the bow.
i looked on the internet some more and am now willing to take a WAG at not only the ship but where and when as well.
ship USS Missouri, BB 63
place Tokio Bay
date 2nd Sept 1945 or 6th Sept 1945 it could be either date.
as im sure you know, the Japanese surrender was signed aboard the Missouri, 9/2/45. i have found a photo taken from her deck on that day which shows her main guns elevated and pointed to starboard as in your picture. follow the link and look at picture #4. note also the crew lining the deck
http://www.ahoy.tk-jk.net/macslog/TheMightyMo.USSMissouri.A.html

i have also found a picture, said to have been taken of the Missouri, in Toykio Bay, on the 6th, this picture is almost the same as your one but from lower and closer. the background is the same. they could almost come from the same roll of film. this was the day that she sailed from Japan to head to Guam and then Hawaii.
for a definate answer  you could send a PM to member Janos. (do a member search top of this page) and ask him to look at your post he was in the Navy and im sure would be able to ID it.

correction to my last.
i have found a better source for the photo i posted. it shows the date taken, as 9/2/45. the day of the surrender. i think this might make more sense. i dont know if a ship that was leaving port would be going through all the ceremony shown in the picture. would have thought they would be getting ready for sea.
picture is about half way down

Pete

the photo you posted of the B29s is also on the 39th BG site and credited as being taken by a 19th BG ship. the photo is from a private collection. you might want to contact that source.
this link and you will recognise your photo

Thanks for that link. I wrote him.

I also followed some links and found this
http://www.geocities.com/awood999/index19.html

It lists my uncle as 28th Sqd, "City of Nashville".  That's very appropiate since Billy played for U Tenn (I think before, but definately after the war) before being drafted by the Red Skins.

Also from that page, that photo was taken by the navigator, Lawrence Materi, of the City of Nashville
