1st Air Force Question - 02/12/2008 07:42:28 AM
Gentlemen,

I have a question about the 1st Air Force.

Was Brigadier General Krogstad the Commander (acting) as of 10 December 1941 when Major General Dargue left for Pearl Harbor? [emphasis on acting!] Then relieved on 5 March 1942 by Major General Bradley.

But during this entire period General Korgstad was still in command of I Bomber Command (check XX Bomber Command)?

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Regards,

Craig

Major General Herbert A. Dargue was killed in an airplane crash on 12-12-41 at Bishop, California.

Brig. Gen. Arnold N. Krogstad took command of the 1st Air Force around the time of Dargue's death.

Tony,

My question was whether or not General Krogstad held the position of Cdr, 1st Air Force acting (re: Commander (acting), 1st Air Force), since he was also in command at the same time Commander of I Bomber Command.

The answer is in the above mentioned reference work.

I do know that Dargue never went to Pearl Harbor after December 10, 1941 (as you erroneously state in your post), unless they shipped his body there.  His body was not discovered until May 1942 and was not retrieved until July 1942.  Just wanted to clear the Dargue thing up for you.

More about Maj. Gen. Herbert A. Dargue: he flew an airplane in the chase of Pancho Villa in 1916.  TonyM.

My question was whether or not General Krogstad held the position of Cdr, 1st Air Force acting (re: Commander (acting), 1st Air Force),

According to my reference materials,
Krogstadt was in "command" of the 1st AF from 10 December 1941 to 5 March 1942.
Can't get much clearer than that.
I hope that this helps.  Good luck with your research.

For those interested:
There is a photograph of General Dargue as a young Lt. at Casas Grandes, Mexico, in 1916 during the Pancho Villa chase in a book titled:

Krogstadt commanded both, from Hq in New York City, during the dates you mentioned.  He then was relieved of both and became commander of the 2nd District, Technical Training Command at St Louis (I think).
I also find that Dargue was killed in a plane crash on 12/10/41 near Bishop, California.  He was on his way to Hawaii.

Nope, that is not correct.  Dargue was killed December 12, 1941.

I have the crash report right here in front of me.
See AAF Aircraft Accident Report Call # 46067, December 12, 1941, Accident # 7.
Published newspaper accounts also state that the airplane went missing on 12-12-41.

I also find that Dargue was killed in a plane crash on 12/10/41 near Bishop, California.

The National Aviation Hall of Fame website says that Dargue died on 12 December 1941.  Several photos of Dargue can be found at www.earlyaviators.com  including the 1916 Mexico photo referenced above.

What is interesting about the Dargue crash is that the wreckage was found May 7, 1942 by Roy G.B. Burns, the father of the copilot.  The airplane was found at the 11,000 foot elevation near Thumb Lake, California, about 15 miles southwest of Bishop, CA.

Men killed in the 12-12-41 crash:

Pilot: Captain James G. Leavitt
Copilot: 1stLt. Homer C. Burns
Engineer: SSgt. Stehpen W. Hoffman
Radio operator: Private Samuel J. Van Hamm
Passenger: Major General Hebert A. Dargue
Passenger: Lt.Col. Charles W. Bundy
Passenger: Lt.Col. George W. Rickey
Passenger: Major Hugh F. McCaffery

I apologize for the error.  The date in Dargue's bio says Dec. 12, as well.  He must have left Mitchel Field on 12/10/41, but was killed on 12/12/41.  I wondered why the Army Register for 1942 did not list his death, now I know.  The same thing happened with Major General Millard Harmon.  He disappeared in Feb 1945, but was not pronounced dead until Feb 1946.
