1Lt. J.W. Haggard 430th FS - 05/07/2008 11:03:51 AM
Hi,

Re 1Lt. J.W. Haggard from the 430th FS.

Date of death given on ABMC site as 8th June 1945.

Was this actual date of death OR the date given as Finding of Death which would become date of death being 7th June 1944 ?

Thanks
Alex

Alex,

According aviationarchaeology.com Lt Haggard had a landing accident at Florennes on 11 Oct 44, and on cieldegloire.com he's creditred with a kill on 18 Dec 44.
This would make his date of death in June 1945 the correct one...

Regards,

Leendert

Hello Leendert,

Thank you for the link I have it but did not look in it.

Do you know of the event that was the reason for his death ?

Was it due to any earlier injury or was it due to something that took place on the 8th June 45 ?

Thank you

Alex

Alex
According to "The Backdoor Gang" by Shennan Lt. Haggard was flying a P-38 from Nice to Langensalza on June 8th and failed to arrive. It was found that he had crashed fatally near Strasbourg with cause not determined. Hope this helps. Al

Alex,
Jack Haggard was killed on 8 Jun 45 near Strasbourg, France while on a routine hop from airfield Y-52 (Nice) to airfield R-2 (Bad Langensalza). As the historian of the 474th FGA, this is one of the losses I have been researching. I have talked with several surviving 430th FS vets who knew Jack and all of them told me his accident was a mystery. One of my French research contacts recently found a witness to the crash near Strasbourg. I am hoping to get more details soon. I will post them as soon as I get them.

Cheers, Gary Koch
