1/Lt George M Rose (and Crew) - 321st BS - 03/26/2007 04:29:30 AM
Hi All,

I am currently searching for details (including the aircraft serial and MACR) of the 321st BG B-24 that was lost on January 6, 1943.  The pilot was 1/Lt George M Rose, O-431163 listed on the ABMC website as declared dead on December 14, 1945.

The Pacific Wreck Database website for the aircraft can be found at:
http://pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b-24/walker-search.html

Any furtther information would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel,

Firstly, I don't believe a MACR was ever raised for this loss, pre-dating as it did the introduction of the MACR in general use.  The closest serial I have come to this loss is 41-23773, written off 8-Jan-43.

The attached doc is in the NAA (Australian National Archives)
Cheers

Pete and Daniel,

Thank-you very much for that.  I don't have a crew list for the loss of 41-23773 / WILCO, so things are looking good on that front - Will see if I can confirm that through other sources.  Only problem is that the B24BestWeb page that Daniel has listed above states the aircraft served with the 319th BS rather than the 321st.

Thanks also for the letter on the National Archives site.  Do you have the series/barcode number for that item?

Daniel - it wasn't unusual for a Squadron to Borrow A/C from another for a Mission.
Losses listed by the Squadron A/C was in  , not the Crew.

Cross-lending of aircraft between Squadrons of the same Group was quite common.  The real problem is that much of the 90BG operations during the latter part of 42 and early 43 were either not well documented, or the documents have since been lost to the ravages of time.

Unfortunately for historians, the men at the time were more interested in going home than in providing a cogent history for future generations, or even in keeping military records straight..

Can't say that I blame them.

Walker Search B-24 date of loss - 03/27/2007 07:19:22 PM
Dear all,

Thanks for the input on this case... keep me posted if anything else can be confirmed.

For this bomber loss (B-24 piloted by Lt. Rose) I have also seen a date of loss of January 5, 1943.

Not sure which is correct - the 5th or 6th.

As mentioned, the fact this loss is just before MACR's got going is a problem for confirming it.
