19th bomb group, 93rd bomb sqdrn, 314th wing in Guam - 10/07/2007 07:42:05 AM
From May 1945 to August 1945, my father 2nd LT Harry L Rugg was a Bombaider/Navigator in the  314th; Grp: 19th; Squadron; 93rd  bomb squadron, CREW #82 and after August in the 459th. During that time frame he flew on 17 combat missions over many different cities in Japan.  From his Record of Combat" document and many other records and photos that I have, he was a crew member on the B29s City of Clifton and the City of Flatbush.  I have photos of him looking out of an open window of the City of Flatbush, just in front of the navigator's window where he had my mother's name "Betty" painted just under it.  In the photo, "Tommie Sr." was also painted on the side.  All records that  I have researched on-line related to these two aircraft, don't have my father as a crew member.  The website 19th Bombardment Grp, does have him on the roll call list but has his name listed as Henry not Harry.  My question is: What other areas can I research to find out more about flight crew listngs for this BGrp during this time frame?  Your guidance and advice is appreiciated.

Wade ...

I am a bit confused....You say your father was a member of the 93nd BS, 19th BG and then later on a member of the 459th BS (?).

(The 459th BS was a Squadron in the 330th BG).

The four squadrons in the 19th BG were the 28th,30th ,93rd and 435th.
Did you mean the 435th?

Both of the B-29s... "City of Clifton"...42-65308 and the "City of Flatbush"... 44-69682 were in the 19th BG.

In any event, I would recommend contacting the website for the B-29s in WW II and Korea,
http://b-29.org

My records list City of Clifton as S/N 42-65308 and City of Flatbush (AKA as Atomic Tom)  S/N 44-69862.

You can order the history cards from Maxwell AFB, AL. The cards will give you the date and place of manufactor, units of assignment and final disposition of the aircraft. It will NOT give you the combat record.

I looked at http://www.geocities.com/awood999/index19.html which has a list of air crews for 19th BG Guam.  I found City of Flatbush, but not City of Clifton.  Your father wasn't listed though for City of Flatbush. Sorry, but the link might be of use anyways.

Thanks for your response.  Sorry for the confusion. In Oct 1945, my father was promoted to 1st LT after receiving the Air Medal and was in the 93rd squadron and later that month went to the 459th squadron.

Wade...Did he transfer to the 330th BG ?  As I pointed out the 459th was assigned to the 330th BG. Did you mean the 435th BS of the 19th BG ?

Jim,

Your question drove me to pull out all the papers of my father and you are correct, I missed it in my research.  On October 29th, 1945, my father was reassigned to the 330th Bomb Grp.  The reassignment took him out of combat and he returned stateside.  His last combat mission, however, was with the 93rd over Isezaki, Japan on Aug 15th, 1945.  The reassignment documents I have show that  Crew #84, AP#44-69862 was reassigned to the 459th Bomb Sqdn, in the 330th Bomb Group.
Crew #84  consisted of:
1st Lt William R Mac Elroy- AC
F/O Stephen Kellner - P
1st Lt Harry L Rugg - Nav
F/O Bernard T Mc Caffery - FE
1st Lt William R Lounsberry - V
Sgt Irwin Wisotsky - ROM
Sgt Carroll Rowe - GNR
Sgt Edward F Garramano - GNR

I am assuming the this Crew#84 was the crew that took over Flatbush after Jum Hall.  I have attached a photo of my Father in the City of Flatbush.

Thanks again.

I did not find your father on my list of bombardier graduates.  It is a large list but certainly not complete.  Do you have documentation showing him as a bombardier?

I have a website dedicated to bombardiers and if he is one I'd like to add him to the site.

The only docs I have on that is a photo of his graduating class from Bombardier-Navigator Training graduating class,  Squadron 89. Santa Ana Army Air Base, April 20, 1944.  See attached photo.  Also, info on follow-up bombing training at in Dec 1944, PYOTE  RATTLESNAKE BOMBER BASE
