I believe it was either the Bijou or the Roxy.

There was no Eighteenth Air Force during World War II.  The Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Nineteenth, both Twenty-Thirds, and a second Eleventh Air Force were all formed after World War II.  The Twenty-First and Twenty-Second Air Forces existed under different designations during the war.  Since there were two Eighth Air Forces, there was a total of 17 numbered air forces during the war.

Hello Guy's,
Thanks for replies.

The Reason for my question is that in the ABMC website in the WW2 Honour Site A Grandson, Mr. Michael S Hall has -

WW2 Honoree
Steven Hall
Home Town = Sparta, MI
18th USAAF

Activity During WW2 = 18th Air Force
Purple Heart Recipient.

I just thought that there may be a typo error or perhaps Michael has it wrong and could he have meant the 8th AF ?

Anyway I thought that someone may be able to contact him and perhaps help him if needed to make any corrections that may be needed.

Thanks again Guys
Alex

Hello Terry,

Yes I hope it is. And if Michael reads this thread then perhaps he can get it corrected.

All the best

Alex ,
I checked the 18th AAF/FMPU Site but his name is not listed on any of
Combat Camera Teams.
Still looking,
Mike

Mike:
Close but no cigar!
The First Motion Picture Unit (FMPU) was a nickname for the 18th Air Force Base Unit of the United States Army Air.

Terry,
Don't encourage this stuff.  You were right when you said it was a typo.
The unit could have been any number of units with "18th AAF" in it's title, but it wasn't.  Scott removed the previous post for good reason, now he's putting the same dribble up again.

Dude -
Correct word is DRIVEL - Not Dribble
What is wrong with checking a WebSite for a name
in trying to help Alex ? Please elaborate as a lot of other
Members would also like to know.

Alex,
I want to apologize for using your thread and question for airing differences between myself and another member.  I hate it when someone can not stick to the subject and goes out on some tangent not related to the question.  Not only that but continues to rant and rave after being told he's wrong.  There are a couple of these legends in their own mind types on this forum.
You can bet that what Bernie and Terry has told you are closer to the truth than any other member can tell you, including myself.
I hope this does not leave you with a bad impression of the AAF Forum.
Mark

Perhaps some of this is a perception problem.  Mike, if you think someone has misidentified a unit, rather than appearing to jump in with apparently off the subject info, you might say:

You said 18th AAF.  Could the unit have been another unit whose designation included "18th AAF" like the 18th AAF Base Unit (1st Motion Picture Unit) in Culver City CA?  Or the 18th AAF Glider Training Det at Bates Field? Or the 18th AAF Technical Training Det at Farmingdale, NY? Or the 18th AAF War Service Training Det at Lynchburg, VA?

From the outside looking in...and its a general comment aimed at no one specific!!!
I think this 18th 'hole in one' has been well and truly flogged to death! Shake hands, agree to disagree, and move on. There's a lot of important, worthwhile and rewarding work yet to be done on here; there's never a day goes by when we dont have a 'new' visitor trying to seek out help. Thats what we ALL do best in our various ways. Its been said too many times on here before, if you have an issue on whatever subject with someone, please take it in private and use the PM facility.

He has called me every name he can think of, most of them not repeatable in this forum.  I have refrained from sinking to his level, because I promised Scott that I would keep it clean.  He has some fixation on this 18th AAF Base Unit, for whatever reason.  He has tried to advocate books on this forum with some hidden agenda.  Scott has warned everyone about doing this.  I think that if this continues, he should be banned from the forum altogether.  I will let Scott decide that one.

Hello Guy's,

Dear Bernie, Terry, Ian, Mark and Mike,

Thank you for your input.

When I asked the original question it was out of interest in the find I made in the WW2 Honoree list for Steven Hall of Sparta, MI.

I received what I thought were plausible replies in that it was probably a typo error on the part of the Grandson or the by the website (in this case ABMC).

Or that the person served in what was a Photo Unit based Stateside but with Sections spread across the War areas.

What I did not expect was what followed.

Please while I apreciate the input, do not alow the thread to drift away from the main thread.

In any case I thank you all for takeing the time to reply, some of my Questions placed on this site have never had any responce .

Thank you all,

Alex
