17th Dec 44 loss - 09/20/2006 11:05:03 PM
Hello,

Seeking details of the loss on the 17th December 1944 of 42-43278. Where did she crash ?

I beleive she was from the 37th Bomer Squadron.

I have two names from the ABMC site from the 37th KIA this date.
1Lt. Donald V. Leslie and 1Lt. Merle C. Mays.
Anyone have names of the other crewmembers ?

Thanks

Alex

42-43278 had B/N 36 (17th BG 37th BS), named Jersey Bouncer III. It was in service with 37th BS from September 12th 1943 until December 17th 1944, when it was shot down by FLAK over Germany, had 130 missions. The 17th BG was based at Dijon, France, at that date. The 17th BG had two missions that day, first target was defense positions in the Siegrfried Line around Ober-Otterbach, Germany, and second target was more defense positions in the near area.

Pilot was 1st Lt Leslie. MACR # 10713 will contain the crew names, and other details. 34th BS lost 42-43312 "Wolve's Delight" (crew bailed out and returned to base).

Added photo shows B/N 36 after 110 missions; engine change.

Regarding "Jersey Bouncer III", no new info about where it crashed.
The flak that hit 42-43312 "Wolve's Delight" might have been from guns near the alternate target this Marauder bombed, Briesach. When checking map, it's most probably Breisach-am-Rhein, very close to the French border in Alsace area. 42-43312 crashed in the vicinity of Gerardmer, France. This place is located West of Colmar, France, which again lies in almost straight line West of Breisach-am-Rhein, Germany. The crew bailed out and landed in friendly territory West of Belfort, France, which lies South of Gerardmer.
The main target, Oberotterbach (Siegfried Line) is also located close to the French border in Alsace area. Maybe the MACR have info about the crash location?

Added photo shows "Jersey Bouncer III" in flight.
