Hi, 162nd TRS was in the 363rd Recce Group. Squadron in Group Codes "C3". Previously the 363rd FG until 4th September 44, "C3" was the Squadron code for the 382nd FS, Squadron was renumbered to 162nd TRS. 363rd TRG from 4th Sept 44 the 162nd TRS was Transfered to the 10th RG from 29.9.44. but it must have been merged into another Squadron of the 10th RG as there seems to be no mention of it in the 10th at all, as Terry says. ref = "Support & Strike". photo of a "C3" coded a/c in the book. and for thought I think that perhaps the "IX" has been misunderstood as the 9th AAF is also read as the IX AAF . Although "Camoflage & Markings number 16 does list the Unit Code for the 162nd TRS - 10 PRG as "IX". All the best Alex

What I said was the Sqd code C-3 is not mentioned in the book, the 162TRS code IX is. According to WWII Combat Sqds the 162TRS assigments were:for WWII 363rd (Later Tactical Recon) Gp, 1 Mar 1943; XII Tactical Air Command, 29 Sep 1944 (attached to Recon Gp [Prov], XII Tactical Air Command, 16 oct 1944-21 Apr 1945) Ninth Air Force, 15 Nov 1944; XIX Tactical Air Command, 21 Apr 1945 (attached to 9th Recon Gp [Provisional], 21 Apr 1945; 10th Photo (later Recon) Gp, 25 Apr 1945; United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe, 24 Jun 1945; Third AF, 3 Aug 1945-3 Feb 1946. Until Sept. 1944 the 382FS / 363FG was coded C3 with red nose band/spinner. In Sept. the 363rd was re-designated as 363TRG ,the 382nd becoming the 162TRS still coded C3. In Oct. the 162nd. was assigned to the Provisional Recon. Group ( 1st TAF ) and code changed to IX. In April 1945 the 162nd went to the 10PRG keeping their IX code. The 10th had group marking of blue-white checks on tail tips, and squadron colours on noses; the 162nd retained their red, but a few F-6s in this group ( 12th, 15th and 162nd.) had squadron colour checks on nose bands. I did a colour profile of a P-51D-5 44-13554 C3-P "Roscoe II " for the pilot but can't upload it .Nick

Hi Everyone, thank you very much for your detailed answers; I'm investigating about Léo F Skenyon, 162nd TRS, shot down on November 25th 1944 in area Strasbourg, France. I have compilled a very big documentation about his last flight, found the family of the (last) german fighter who shot him down, and found his crash site and witnesses of the wartime that found him at the crash site. But I can find NO photo about his squadron, neither with C3 code nor with the IX one. He was on Azelot A-95 in november 1944, and I doubt that any Photo was taken there at this time(?) The weather was so bad, and they were not such an "interestning " subject for the actuallities as the fihgther squadrons; so I can imagine that no war reporter came on Azelot and that this squad never was filmed (?) or photografied. It seems Skenyon's Mustang colors were silver (alu) and olive green (no other one found on crash site). I only have become (thank you Phil! ) two drawings about IX mustangs, with individual lettering IX-H, plane called "Azel", but in a late configuration of 1945). Other ones drawings are those with the plane of Jim brinks, C3-M, and the other one C3-A, as these planes still were in the 382th FS. But no Photos... so I'm very interested for the photo with "C3" Mustang you evocate, Alex! Thanks for all your explanations! M.

Nice picture, Alex! thank you very much! Do you know how could I know if Skenyon's plane (44-14036) came from the 382nd FS or from the 12th TRS? It is in MACR given, that it was an F6-D (reconaissance Mustang), so it probably came from another TRS (the 12th?) or directly from the factory? thanks for your help. flyingkag

Hi, You would perhaps glean such info on the aircraft's previous Squadron's by contacting Craig Fuller at the AAIR website and requesting a copy of the aircraft record card and a translation which makes understanding the card very much easier. There is a charge but I do not know how much, it would depend on the size or number of pages. All the best Alex

Flyingkag... I had trouble to post here for a while - so sorry for the delay, but here's a photograph you might want to see F-6C 42-103573 coded IX-D cordially Martin / Swiss Mustangs

Flyingkag... another note: Skenyon's plane, P-51D-5-NA 44-14036, was originally assigned to the 8th USAAF ETO and sent to BAD-2 Warton, England (BAD = Base Air Depot) - Special Proj. # 92753R - there it was readied for issue as replacement a/c to a Fighter Group, but due to the increased need for Tac recon photo ships, this a/c soon was selected with a number of other P-51D-5's and D-10's for conversion to F-6D standard, which also was accomplished at BAD-2 Warton. Thank you very much, Martin The photo is very nice, and it's the firts one I get! Do you have any info when it was taken and who was the pilot? Thanks for the informations about the plane; could it be possible tio have a copy of the original doculment that gives these details? Do you maybe have any view of the Azelot-nancy airfield (A-95)? the 162nd was based there from november 44 to march 45. Very sincerely Flyingkag
