1596th AAF Base Unit

I´m looking for information about a Pilot, Captain David L. Satz, O-724832 who died non battle on 3 July 1945. He was from the 1596th Air Force Base Unit and is buried on the Ardennes in Belgium. Does anybody know where I can find information about this Unit or where and how Captain Satz died?

    aviationarchaeology.com has the following info.

On 3 July 45  a  C-54D, serial number 42-72680 , 2FRG (2nd Ferry Group) of AT (Air Transport Command), crashed in the Azores (on Santa Maria,  4 mi E of Vila Do Porto).  The pilot killed in the crash was David L Satz.   You can order the full report for a fee.

Thank you for your help. If he was killed in Portugal, why is he buried on the Ardennes War Cemetery in Belgium? Was he stationed there?

The portion of the accident report describing the aircraft as assigned to the 2nd Ferrying Group in July 1945 is incorrect, since the 2nd Ferrying Group was disbanded on 31 Mar 1944 and replaced by the 552nd AAF Base Unit (2nd Ferrying Group).
The 1596 AAF Base Unit was organized on 12 Apr 1944 at Presque Isle AAB, ME as the 588th AAF Base Unit  (2nd Foreign Transport Group) and assigned to the Ferrying Division of Air Transport Command.  On 1 December 1944, it was redesignated as the 1596 AAF Base Unit  (2nd Foreign Transport Group), reassigned to the Atlantic Division of Air Transport Command, and moved to Dover AAB (where the 552nd AAF Base Unit was also located).

Although the Azores are politically part of Portugal, they are located in the middle of the Atlantic.  At the time of the accident, Air Transport Command's 1391st AAF Base Unit (Hq, Central Atlantic Wing, Air Transport Command) at Santa Maria and 1390th AAF Base Unit (Foreign Transport Station) at Lagens Field were located in the Azores.

    Hi,
All the american WWII pilots who died in Portugal where transfered - at the end of the war - to the cemiteries in Belgium and France...

The British and the Germans bought parcels in local cemeteries or in Lisbon and buried those who perished there. Some americans where also buried localy or in the british cemetry but after the end of the war they transfred the bodies...

    Best regards

I do not have much information on this, but my father, Theodore Einik, also died in this crash. He died before I was born and I was subsequently adopted so I have little information on him either. I thought he was in the 1391st AAF unit, but, according to the National Archives, his military records were evidently destroyed in a fire. This website, www.fold3.com does have some photographs of the air base on the Azores and several photographs of the funerals of the casualties and of the crash site itself.

According to the information I do have, they were on a test flight and the plane crashed into the side of a mountain.

I did not see a link to "Research Help" anywhere. Is it on this page?
