1051st Military Police Company 12th Air Force WWII

I need help in locating my Fathers military history. I have alot of information, yet I cannot find out anything specific about his unit. He belonged to the 1051st Military Police Company out of Kessler Field. He served in Africa 1943 and went into Sicily. There was a commendation for his unit from Edwin Druse P.M. of Constantine sent to Major General Doolittle.

Any help in locating information on these groups would be greatly appreciated

Tony,

Write to the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. They can send you a unit history. The MP company was probably attached with a 15th or 12th AF unit that operated out of North Africa and then Italy.

See our Research Page for the address & web site, link: http://www.armyairforces.com/help.asp

Best of luck,

Hi :-)

I checked google and came up with the Retired Military Police Association

R.M.P.A.

P.O. Box 2534

Fayetteville, NC,

28314-4292

910-867-4292

(Perhaps they can assist you further).

Thank you for the fast replies. I have done alot of Internet research and always find dead ends. It seems I can find most anything about units except the MP divisions. I even found the 5th Army Band website... He left me a 5th army patch and some Airman's wings along with several ribbons. Also we have copy of the letter of commendation that refers to the 1051st Military Police Company (AVN) I can't find what AVN stood for. I am guessing it had something to do with Avionics, but why would an MP company need avionics???I also have a picture ID with his fingerprints and on the back it says HEADQUARTERS 1051 Military Police Co AVN

Thanks again for your help... Anything else you can think of would be appreciated.

Tony....I would take a guess and suggest AVN means AViatioN....this is due to the assignment to the 12 AAF. and latere the 15th.

In fact, the more I think about ir, this make sense.

Well as Jim writes it's not the MP's that need aviation, it's the aviation guys that need the MP's.

An AAF unit could be very large, take a Bombardment Group as an example. You have the four squadrons, 3 or 4 support commands, a headquarters element, and you're quickly up into the 4 to 5 thousand personnel range.

Take the personnel issue with the military security issue and you can easily see why an aviation command would need its own MP unit.

One example I can point to is in 8th Air Force, the 381st Bombardment Group (Heavy) which had the 1142nd MP (AVN) attached to it.
