1,000 Kills?

I have read a couple of magazines and books on the 4th FG and in them they have all said that the 4th was the highest scoring group in the ETO with a 1,000 kills. But I have also read that the 354th, 56th and 357th were the groups that scored the most kills. Whats the real truth? I know the 4th was one of the first FG's in the Eight AF but is the claim that they were the highest scoring group legit? Can anyone help me out on this because this is confusing to me.

The 4th was tops in combined scores, with 1,016 total (550 in the air, 466 on the ground). The 354th had the most exclusively a2a kills, with 701, and the 355th had the most on the ground with 504. The 56th had the most a2a in the 8th with 679.5. the 354th "Pioneer Mustang Group" was actually part of the 9th AAF, even though it spent a large portion of its career escorting 8th AAF bombers. The 4th only took the top spot due to their last mission of the war, a strafing mission designed exclusively to put them over the top. Otherwise the 56th would have been the top scoring. And for the record, the top ace of the ETO, Gabby Gabreski, flew P-47s in the 56th, and the top scoring Mustang ace, George Preddy, was in the 352nd.
